I downloaded it from the link in

And it cannot be run on two machines. Both installed VS 2003.http://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/default.aspx has RTM version.

Cannot Start SQL Server 2000 after installing Vista

Just installed the Vista Business Upgrade. Now I cannot start SQL Server 200
0
even though my Windows Authentication has not changed. The Service Manager
reports "Access Denied" when I try to start the server.
Do I need to reinstall the server or is there a workaround? I tried the SSMS
but had no success.

malcolmHi,
can you elaborate more, is you MSSQL service run under domain or local
account?...However you an use registry rebuild to rebuild sql server
instllation and accounts without effecting your databases.

You could try to start it from Computer Management, or run Service Manager
by running as Admin. I guess the first showstopper is the UAC. But the
more basic problem is that SQL 2000 is not supported on Vista, so you may
not get it work at all. If you need the databases, you will need to find
another machine with a different operating system, or upgrade to SQL 2005.
(And you need SP2 of SQL 2005 to run on Vista.)

cannot start SQL server

I was using SQL server service manager with no problem.
I've installed "Business Contact Manager" and now service manager cannot
connect to the server.
Thanks for any advise.
Is the problem that you cannot connect to sql server or that the service
itself cannot start. You can try starting the service through the services
MMC instead of through service manager, by going to:
start->run->services.msc, look for the MSSQLServer (or MSSQL$INSTANCENAME)
service and do a right click->start.
What error are you seeing?
You can check this KB for some suggestions on how to troubleshoot SQL
connectivity:

Also, check the latest SQL Error logs (c:\program files\microsoft sql
server\mssql\LOG\errorlog - the file with no extension is the latest sql
errorlog) and the application system event logs (in event viewer) for any
errors which occur during the time you attempted to start the SQL Service.

Cannot start sql agent in 2005

I get this message when I try to start a sql 2005 server agent. Im
running windows 2003 service pack 1 and sql 2005 service pack 1. The
strange thing is the agent and sql service are running as a domain
account with sysadmin privileges.
Can anyone help?
SQLServerAgent could not be started (reason: SQLServerAgent must be
able to connect to SQLServer as SysAdmin, but '(Unknown)' is not a
member of the SysAdmin role). You can see the login attributes used by Agent if you in SSMS right-click Agent, the Connection
page. Make sure that this account/login exists and a login in SQL Server and that it has sysadmin
privileges in SQL Server.

|||Hi,
If you have an default instance of SQL 2000 installed already, then you can
not start the SQL 6.5 service and run in parellel.
To trobleshoot , Go to command prompt and go to the SQL 6.5 folder
(\MSSQL\BINN folder).
Now execute
SQLSERVR -m
THis will give you the correct error mesasge to troubleshoot.
Do the same for SQL 2000 as well.
Right way to do is :-
1. Install SQL 6.5
2. Install SQL 2000 Named instance.
So both the services can run in parellel.
Thanks

You can install diferent versions of SQL Server on the same server, however you need to install them in the right order. That is 6.5 first, then 7 and finally 2000. As you already had 2000 installed that is why you can not run 6.5. Also if you have mutipl
e versions of SQL Server you can only run one of them at a time. When you have mutiple versions you get the option to switch between them on your start menu.
You need to uninstall 6.5. If you really want it on the same server. After uninstall, take a backup of your 2000 master and detach all your user databases. Uninstall 2000. Install 6.5. Install 2000. Make sure 2000 is the active service and restore your ma
ster database (this is to synch user ID's and loggin's), attach your user databases and you should be up and running. You can then switch between 2000 and 6.5.
If you have some SQL jobs, you can either script them out before uninstalling 2000 or backup and recover the msdb database like the master.
Hope this helps

If you have an default instance of SQL 2000 installed already, then you can
not start the SQL 6.5 service and run in parellel.
To trobleshoot , Go to command prompt and go to the SQL 6.5 folder
(\MSSQL\BINN folder).
Now execute
SQLSERVR -m
THis will give you the correct error mesasge to troubleshoot.
Do the same for SQL 2000 as well.
Right way to do is :-
1. Install SQL 6.5
2. Install SQL 2000 Named instance.
So both the services can run in parellel.

It seems your SQL 6.5 is not installed properly, Might be a registrry issue.
In this case only solution is
remove manually. But this may not make your SQl 2000 server as default. So
solution to
make your SQL 2000 up is:- Since your SQl 2000 service is down you can
detach aswell.
1. Remove SQL 6.5 manually and tr restarting SQL 2000. If it fails then:-
2. Copy the MDF and LDF (including system databases) to a safe location.
3. Remove SQL 2000 (Use control panel add remove programs)
4. Install SQl 2000 in the same folder structure as old
5. Install the service pack saem as old
6. Stop sql server
7. COpy the MDF and LDF (taken in step -2) to the same folders
8. Start SQl server service.

Cannot start service

I am VERY NEW to SQL server. I hope you will pardon my total ignorance.
That said:
I have installed SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition on my local PC running
Windows XP Home Edition.
From the CD I installed everything under the "SQL Server 2000 Components"
menu item on the install disk.
I now have an icon in the system tray for the SQL Server Service Manager.
When I open that icon I see a server name (the network name of my local PC,
I have 2 computers on a small network)
I see SQL Sever in the Services box.
There's a message on the bottom of that window that says:
Stopped - \\700XL - MSSQL Server (700XL is my computer name)
When I click on the Start/Continue button I get the following error message:
ERROR
The service did not start due to logon failure.
When I click OK I get the following message:
SQL Server Service Manager
An error 1069 - (The service did not start due to a logon failure.)
occurred while perfomring this service operation on teh MSSQLServer service.
According to the Enterprise Manager I am using Windows Authentication.
I don't even know where to begin. Can anyone help me please?
Thank you
MarkThis is a Windows problem. Windows tries to start the service using the
account you have specified. However, the password that Windows is using is
incorrect, so it cannot login for the service. Administrative tools,
Services, and there you need to specify the correct password for the SQL
Server service.

When I set the MSSQL Server properties log on as "Local System account", it

I'm hoping that setting isn't going to cause me a different problem

You might want to search in Books Online for "level token". That will lead you to the section which
descries the service account, and stuff like that.

cannot start report server on local computer

HI,

I tried to deploy reports on locahost. Yet, I still need to start the mssqlserver service on local computer. I tried all the possibilities shown from the help but still i can't have it started. How will i start mssqlserver service on local computer alone?

thanks

soWillingToLearn,

What are your settings for the msSQLserver service LogOn? Can you check your application log file under Event Viewer to see what error message is being generated.

Ham

cannot start or verify that SQL 2005 is running

Hi,

I am new to sql 2005.

I have installed a trial version of 2005 enterprise edition.

After installing I went to Management Studio. I noticed that the server name

dropdown menu was blank so I tried to browse. No server names appear under local

or network servers. I then went to configuration manager and noticed that

although client protocols are listed under SQL client native config,

SQL server 2005 services and sql server 2005 network config are both blank. Is SQL

installed correctly? I hope this is enough info to illicit a helpful response.

Thank You.

Problem solved. I went to add remove apps and clicked change

on Microsoft SQL Server 2005 button. I am not sure what Microsoft

SQL Server Native Client is so I didn't mess with it. I saw that no instances

were listed under SQL Server 2005 instances so I clicked away until I had

added an instance - MSSQLSERVER. I am going to be using .net 2.0 framework

objects to connect to SQL so I am not sure if I messed up by Not installing in

mixed mode. Any advice on the mixed mode issue would be appreciated.

|||If you have no need for mixed mode, then don't install it. It kind of sounds like you don't so no worries.

Cannot start MSSQL Server 7

I am not able to start the MSSQL Server service on my system ever since
I shifted my house and got a new network provider. Earlier, I was on
the local cable hub, now my computer is on a DSL network. I don't know
if the network would have something to do with it, but I am just
providing information for the sake of completeness.
When I try starting MSSQL Server from the Services applet in the
Administrative Tools in Control Panel, I get a message saying,
The MSSQLServer service on Local Computer started and then stopped.
Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for
example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.
Please help.
Could you check the SQL Server error log and let us know if there are any
errors? Also check the event viewer. You can find the error log in MSSQL\Log
folder.

You need to check the SQL Server errorlog, which is in
C:\Progam Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Logs. There is ERRORLOG and
then ERRORLOG.1 to .6, which are the most recent logs.

The only reason I can think of why SQL Server would start and then
stop, is that it runs into a fatal error.

Cannot start Microsoft SQL Server agent & Enterprise manager

Hi:
I am receiving the following error message while trying to open Enterprise
Manager in MSSQL 2000 Server.
A connection could not be established to ABCD
Reason : I/O error 1117(the request could not performed because of an I/O
device error.) detected during read at offset 0x00000000b1e000 in file
'Drive:\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\data\master.mdf'..
Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration
properties (by right cliking on the ABCD node) and try again.
This is a Windows 2000 server (Service Pack 4) + MSSQL 2000 (service Pack
3). The MSSQL server service SQL Server Agent services are running under
local system. This is a Standalone machine.
Help is required on an urgent basis as this is a production server.
With Regards
Mitul
You have a problem with the mdf file for your master database file. Possibly the file is locked by
some other process (like anti-virus). If that is the case, try again. If you are unlucky, the master
mdf file is corrupt for some reason, and you have to go the rebuildm.exe route.

Cannot start Log Reader Agent and Snapshot Agent

I am testing peer to peer replication in our environment. I simulated a three node peer to peer topology and a local distributor.

For some wierd reason I cannot get the Log Reader Agent and snapshot agent to start. The domain account under which SQL Server Agent runs has administrator previlage on the box. I also use a domain account for SQL Server Service. (none of the passwords changed).

This is the error I am getting - "Executed as user: abc. A required privilege is not held by the client. The step failed"

Any ideas?

Also this domain account is a member of

SQLServer2005MSSQLUsers$ServerName$MSSQLSERVER

SQLServer2005MSAgentUser$ServerName$MSSQLSERVER

open the properties of each job and change the owner to sa and it should work fine.|||I tried it. No luck...it gives the same error message

Cannot start Integration Services

Hi,
I would like to use the features of the Integration Service on SQL Server
2005.
Therefore I have to connect to Server type Integration Services.
When I connect, it is trying to connect for 30 seconds and then it displays
the message that the service did not respond to the start or control request
in a timely fashion.
When I try to start the integrated services service, it won't start.
The error I am getting is:
Could not start the SQL Server Integration Services service on Local
Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion.
In the Event Log the following 2 errors are created:

following error:

fashion.

ID 7009:

service to connect.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
When I follow this hyperlink, a page is displayed with information how to
display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error.
It tells me to type sc query <service name> from the command prompt.
I have not been able to see this error code, because I don't know the exact
name of the service.
I tried all kinds of variations of the name, in- and excluding spaces and
qoutes, but everytime I got this error:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
I am working with SQL Server 2005 on a Windows 2003 server.
Any ideas? Please see if this applies: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918644
