Can't compress (zip) DB backup - please help.

I am doing Backup - zip - ftp - unzip - restore of my database. Backup is
allways done without problems, but when I am trying to zip backup file (Send
to > Compressed Zip folder) I get the message "Compressed folder error -
file not found or no read permission" !!
However, I file IS there - it have about 3Gb. I have all permissions too - I
can rename or delete it. I have tried to compress with pkzip too. PkZip
succeeds, but then it is impossible to unzip that file. It sounds like some
security problem.
All that happens on:
- Windows 2003
- SQL Server 2000
Please help - give me just fingerpost where to look for answer.
--Whichever compression program you are using, check that they support files
larger than 2 Gig. If using WinZip, use the latest version as it supports
the Zip64 format, which handles files > 2 Gig in size. I believe WinRar
also supports files > 2 Gig. Not sure about PkZip.
Alternatively, you could try our product, MiniSQLBackup, which allows you to
create and restore directly to/from compressed files.

get the same error whenever I try to compress ANY single file > 2 Gig in
size. The backup file can't possibly be locked if you can rename / delete
it as you mentioned in your first post.

because it is weird.
I don't get this error when compressing another file that have 6.2Gb - it is
compressed and decompressed OK.

>|||Now, I have tried with GZIP and it works OK. So, it could be because of
impotence of PKZip 2.5 and Compressor under Windows 2003 to compress files
larger than 2Gb. Strage bahaviour, because it work fine with Win2003 compr.
and file size 6,2 Gb.
However, with GZIP it works fine...

Can't apply transaction logs after restoring a database in enterprise manager

Hi!
I created Full Backup of database and transaction logs in Enterprise manager
.. Restore of the database worked fine, but when i'm trying to apply transact
ion logs i get the followin error:
code:Server: Msg 4326, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The log in this backup set terminates at LSN 7000000063500001, which is too
early to apply to the database. A more recent log backup that includes LSN 7
000000063700001 can be restored.
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.
Why is the possible cause of this problem?

Seems like you try to apply an incorrect transaction log backup. If you can reproduce this using
TSQL code (BACKUP and RESTORE commands) against a test database, we could test and see what the
problem might be.

Can't access default database on start up

Help!
The default database failed on the restore, and was marked
as in load. After trying to get the database out of that
state, the server was stoped and restarted. On the
restart, we now get the message that the default database
can not be accessed, so we can't connect. For some

If you connect using osql, you can use the /d switch to specify another
database as the default. For more information, please consult your SQL
Server Books Online on the topic "default database."

SQL Server support|||Thanks for your help. Even after changing the default db, for the Admin group, I was not able to get connect through EM. So I added my individual userid with a default db of master, and that worked. Now I get to 'fix' the bad database.

Cannot use file for clustered server

I have a clustered server with a clustered instance of SQL Server 2000
running on it. I'm attempting to restore several databases to the clustered
server from our production, non-clustered database server. I also want to do
a move of log files at the same time. On the production server, the database
and log files are on the same raid array. On the clustered server, I've
created two raid arrays, drive H: for the databases which is in cluster group
0 and drive g: for the logs which is in cluster group 1. The database server
on the cluster is in group 0, by the way. I'm doing a restore using an sql
file that works restoring databases and logs to a backup server on different
drives so I'm reasonably sure that the restore syntax is correct. When I
attempt to do a restore of the log files on the cluster server, I receive the
following error.
Msg 5184, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot use file g:\logs\ims.ldf for clustered server. Only formatted files
on which the cluster resource of the server has a dependency can be used.
What does that mean? Does that mean that I have to put the log array in the
same group as the clustered instance of sql server? If that's the case, how
do I do that?

Move the G: Drive into the SQL Group (group 0 from you post).
Stop the SQL clustered group.
Double click SQL Server resource and add G: Drive as a dependency.
Bring the SQL Group back online.
Restore away

Cannot use backup file %s. Originally formatted sector size 512 and now device sector size

Customer is trying to restore a backup of their database. SQL Server gives
the error:
Cannot use backup file %s.
Originally formatted sector size 512 and now device sector size 2048.
Only one guy (in Germany in March 2000) has ever seen this error. And he
never got a resolution.
(already posted in m.p.s.msde group)Figured it out. He was trying to restore the backup from off a CD. Copy the
file to the local hard drive, and it worked.
i've also seen that if you try restoring the backup across a network, it can
also fix it.

I backed up a SQL Database from a SQL Standard Editon. Now I am trying to
restore to a Desktop Edition.
While Restoring, I get the below error:

must restore the backup set from a disk with the same sector size, or over a
network, which uses buffered I/O. Alternatively, you can specify a WITH
BLOCKSIZE clause when you back up the database."
If you can take a new backup of the existing database, use the WITH
BLOCKSIZE clause, specifying the block size of the Desktop Edition machine's
device. If you cannot take a fresh backup, you can try restoring it over the
network, though this will obviously be significantly slower.

reasons the log writes are aligned on physical sector boundaries. 95%+ of
disks will have the same physical sector size, but if you try and move
between different vendor raid systems, or utilise some form of NAS device
then you may see this problem.
The only work-around is to re-create the log file on the new device and
backup/restore the database.

Cannot see network drive when doing restore from disk

Hello, I recently had the PC replaced where I ran SQL Server 2005.

On the old PC I was able to backup and restore DB on a network drive L: w/o any trouble. On the new PC I reinstalled SQL Server making sure that all the settings are exactly as before. However, when I tried to restore the database, I go to "From device" -> Add file, but I do not see L: drive on the list anymore.

However, I seem to have an access to the network in general, as I can open and run sql queries that are stored on the same network drive.

I am spending the whole day comparing 2 machine setting by setting, and cannot find anything different except that the old system was running Win2000, and new one is WinXP, but I doubt that it has anything to do with it.

I also did not see any similar problem reported elsewhere.

Does anyone have any idea what to look for?

Make sure you have the drive mapped correctly on your system.

you may need to copy and paste the UNC location.

I'm not sure how it works on a local machine, but you may want to make sure the login running the SQL service has access to that network drive as well.

It would probably work better for you to just copy a backup file down from that drive to a local drive and restore from there.

Cannot retsore to new server

Hi,
I'm moving an SQL server from one machine that's about to die onto
another, but the restore of databases fails with an error that the
Unicode comparison style should be 0, not 196609.
Can this be changed or does the SQL server need to be reinstalled?

Are you doing the restoration in SQL 7.0 version, if it is SQL 7 then the
source and destination server must of same collation. If it is
SQL 2000 then it will not be an issue.

Drop database and recreated, however cannot restore data. Says Data dump came from Master. If I choose Master, says I must be in single user mode.Hi,
Are you trying to restore the Master database or some user database ? If it
is master u have to
1.. Start Microsoft® SQL ServerT in single-user mode. (use -m in service
manager while starting sql server)
2.. Execute the RESTORE DATABASE statement to restore the master database
backup
3.. Stop and start the SQL Server in Muliuser Mode. (Just Restart MSSQL
Server service)

Cannot restore sql user id?

Hi there,
I'm using MSSQL 2000 Standard Edition. I perform a full
database backup and restore to another server (same
version) with same database name.
Every things is OK except the sql user id I created on the
source id. Is not showing in the destination server user
id.
I try to create back the user id in the destination server
with same user name and password but still fail.
What I need to do is delete the user in the database and
recreate plus set back the permissions again!
It is any ways to backup and restore not only the table
and data but also the user id and permission even I
restore to another server?

ChaiWhen you restore or attach a database from another server, the mapping
between syslogins and sysusers for SQL logins gets out-of-sync. The
database userid is still there but it may be either orphaned or mapped to
the wrong login.
You can correct the mismatch with sp_change_users_login. See the Books
Online <tsqlref.chm::/ts_sp_ca-cz_8qzy.htm> for details.

Cannot restore Report Server to a new machine

Original machine is Windows 2000 with SQL Server 2000 Enterprise SP3 and RS
SP1 all english, new machine is Win2003 with SQL Server 2000 Enterprise SP3
and RS SP1, all german.
The new machine doesn't have the same network name as the original machine.
After a first failed attempt, I decided to start over again on the new
machine:
I de-installed Reporting Services, and reinstalled, applied SP1.
The RS server was functionnal.
I applied the Forms Authentication changes as per the Microsoft article.
The RS server was functionnal.
I restored the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB from the Win2000 server
and copied the encryption key using rskeymgmt. I made sure that the accounts
on the restored DBs are ok by running sp_change_users_login
I'm still getting the same error:
The report server installation is not initialized. Check the documentation
for more information. (rsReportServerNotActivated)
I run rsactivate, and I'm still getting the error.
All possible users have been given SA priviledges on the SQL Server (ASPNET,
IUSR_xxx, the account used by RS to connect to SQL, the local admin and the
administrators group)
Could it be because:
1) You cannot restore a RS server from a Win2000 English machine to a
Win2003 German machine?
2) You cannot restore a RS Server to a server that has a different name?
PS: This is a continuation of post about RSActivate since I have now been
able to narrow down the problem to the reporting server restore, instead of
rsactivate.

From your descriptions, I understood you are not able to move Reporting
Services from Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003. If I have misunderstood
your concern, please feel free to point it out.

Though the user can login to SQL machine, this error happens if the logged
user account which is used to run the Rsactivate did not have permission on
the database and database objects in SQL Server, specifically the
reportserver and reportservertempdb.
You should add the user account which is used to run the rsactivate to the
sql server box as a local admin. By default local admin has full privileges
on the database and the database objects. If you cannot add them as local
admin, you can add them just to the reportserver and reportservertempdb.

I got the solution. One needs to first transfer the 2 databases and restore
them on the new server, copy the encryption key and run rskeymgmt.
Then go to the Report manager so that the RS installation gets activated.
And then and only then, reapply all changes necessary to implement forms
auth.
My problem was that I had copied the 6 config files that are involved in
forms auth from the old server, and there is encrypted info in there that
isn't valid on the new server. Also, activation only works in Windows
authentication mode, that's why one has to start in Windows mode, and only
then move to Forms Auth.

Cannot restore my .ABF file...with no meaningful error message.

This one is just frustrating. I'm trying to restore an .ABF file, but when I go into SQL Server Manager (against the Analysis Services), bring up the restore dialog and click "Browse", I get an error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Managed Code Module

The function failed because of the following error: The given path's format is not supported..

If I manually type in the name of the .ABF, I get:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

File system error: The following error occurred while opening the file ''.
The following system error occurred: . (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services)

Never knew that . was an error message. The frustrating part is I've done a restore before, and I can't for the life of me think of anything I've changed on the server. Anyone else seen this?

Would you be able to provide pathname fo the ABF file you are trying to restore? As much as I see from your description it looks like you used relative path that is not supported; you should specify absolute pathname to the file.

Another idea is to use XML/A instead of UI dialog, something like

<Restore xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<File>your_file_pathname.abf</File>
<Security>CopyAll</Security>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
<Locations/>
</Restore>

IT seems I'm actually experiencing two different problems. I still can't Browse (I've checked the "AllowedBrowsingFolders" property, and it seems to be okay:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Log;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\OLAP\Backup;d:\database

However, I was able to backup and restore one of my existing cubes. I noticed that the backup was placed in the location specified in my "BackupDir" property:

D:\database\

So I copied my .ABF to that directory, and attempted to restore using just the name of the file. This still failed. I then created a new .ABF file from the original server, and tried that, and this time it worked. That suggested that part of my problem was the backup file itself, but when I open the two files with a Hex editor, they look pretty identical; the header and footer information is all the same. Strange and annoying, but at least I've gotten the restore to work (even if I don't know how or why).

Either the location does not exist, or the current login account does not
have access to it. Verify that the file location exists, and that the login
account has permissions on it.
The following are the options I selected:
Source for restore: From device
Backup media: File
Selected path: \\home.dept.some.edu\me\sql2005\backups\
Files of type: Backup Files (*.bak, *.trn)
File name: db.bak
The error showed up when I clicked OK to start the restore process.
In Start->Run, the UNC path opens fine. So it's not the permissions issue.
And the path exists. Do I have to restore using the 'restore' command
instead of using the management studio GUI interface if I want to restore
from UNC?

The fully qualified domain name might be what is tripping it up - have you
tried specifying the IP address or using a non-qualified name. This is
assuming, of course, that this server is on the same domain that you're
trying to restore to...

Actually this probably IS a permissions issue.
The user context that the SQL is operating in is most likely not the same as
the one you're logged into to run SMS.

to login as domain-level accounts with appropriate permissions to access all
system-wide resources they may need access to. This especially includes
network file shares, which is almost certainly the problem here.
