Can't compress (zip) DB backup - please help.
allways done without problems, but when I am trying to zip backup file (Send
to > Compressed Zip folder) I get the message "Compressed folder error -
file not found or no read permission" !!
However, I file IS there - it have about 3Gb. I have all permissions too - I
can rename or delete it. I have tried to compress with pkzip too. PkZip
succeeds, but then it is impossible to unzip that file. It sounds like some
security problem.
All that happens on:
- Windows 2003
- SQL Server 2000
Please help - give me just fingerpost where to look for answer.Whichever compression program you are using, check that they support files
larger than 2 Gig. If using WinZip, use the latest version as it supports
the Zip64 format, which handles files > 2 Gig in size. I believe WinRar
also supports files > 2 Gig. Not sure about PkZip.
Alternatively, you could try our product, MiniSQLBackup, which allows you to
create and restore directly to/from compressed files.

impotence of PKZip 2.5 and Compressor under Windows 2003 to compress files
larger than 2Gb. Strage bahaviour, because it work fine with Win2003 compr.
and file size 6,2 Gb.
However, with GZIP it works fine...

Can''t change the Auto growth option on my Database
I'm currently using SQL Server 2005. Before I have set my database on unrestricted auto growth. But today, I have noticed that the Log file has been set to limit its growth to 2,097,152 MB. I have 160GB space for my log files, I just want to maximize the space for logs in my hard drive.
When I try to change the settings back to auto growth it still keeps on returning to its previous setting it is still set on 2,097,152 MB. What I did was :
Right Click on the Database - Properties - Files - Click the (...) - set the auto growth option to unrestricted - Click Ok
But when I checked log file, it is still set on 2,097,152MB.
Can some one help me change the settings of my Database.
I think its the maximum to which the log file can grow i.e upto 2 TB refer,
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=175549
even if you set it as unlimited it reverts to 2 TB i guess....it seems to be a bug with sp1 and is closed by design, even if you alter the filegrowth through scripts it doesnt revert
|||Is there any querry / command that I can use to set the auto growth option on my log files? my real problem was giving the log files a different settings. My database was running for almost 1 year now. This is the first time that I saw this kind of error, well actually it doesnt return any error. It just doesn't accept the settings that I gave.
Having 160GB of Hard Disk space and my log file is being limited to just 2GB is very frustraiting (lol) Hope you guys can give me some ideas.
|||the query is available in my previous post (link) i gave and they have clearly showed that you cannot change the settings through query either........go for SP2 but i am not sure it will yield the desired results....it was a bug with sp1
But you aren't limited to 2 GB. You are limited to 2 TB.
2,097,152 MB = 2 TB (not 2 GB).
If you were trying to set it to a size greater than 2,097,152 MB, it wasn't an allowable value as you would have been trying to exceed the 2 GB max for a transaction log size.

If it is set to 2TB then why doest it now allow me to make any changes on my data? Sorry for the nooby questions and mistakes. I just dont want anything bad to happen on my database.
What are the solutions that I can make to change it back to normal?
|||
No problem on the noob questions...everyone starts there at some point.
Going back to your problem, what you really want to do is give some details on what the problem really is - all we have to go on is the auto growth and file size issue but in this post you said you can't make any changes to your data. Could you give us a step by step example of what issues you are running into, what the exact error number and messages are?
Thanks,
-Sue
Can't back up Encryption Key
I am trying to backup Encryption Key for my reporting service. Configuration tool, prompts for a encryption key file location and a strong password. When I provide the same and click OK, I get the following error:

It looks like your system has a password complexity filter installed. If you search on the error message, you will see a number of articles explaining how you can build and install one; I would check to see if that's the case first.
In the absence of a password filter, the RS WMI provider will use the local Windows password policy rules on Windows 2003

Can't Attach to DB File using SSMS
Hi all,
I have "SQL Server Express" as well as SSMS-E installed on the same machine. I am trying to get SSMS-E to connect to a database (i.e., an .MDF file) that resides in a folder on the desktop.
After establishing a connection to my "SQL Server Express" instance within SSMS-E, I right-click on "Databases", in the "Object Explorer" window and select "Attach..." and click the "Add..." button. The resulting dialog box opens in the directory:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data" where I see several MDF files. But as I said, my MDF is not in this directory - it's on the desktop.
If I try to navigate to the proper directory on the desktop I see no MDF files. In fact, I cannot even navigate past my username -- that is, I cannot even navigate to the desktop, let alone folders on the desktop. I don't know why.
Of course I *could* put the MDF file in the SQL-E approved directory but shouldn't I just be able to navigate to it using SSMS-E? Incidentally, I *AM* able to connect to the database on my desktop if I use Visual Studio and I specify "UserInstance=true". Not specifying "UserInstance=true" results in this error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:\Documents and Settings\Robin\Desktop\MyCompany.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
Can someone explain what might be causing the problem with SSMS-E, and, for that matter, why it's necessary to specify "UserInstance=true" in Visual Studio?
Thanks so much. I hope these are not too many questions.
Robin
You are attempting to attach a file that is located in a 'protected' storage area -specifically your private 'Desktop'. That file would not be available to other users of the computer. You can attach it to a user instance since that user instance will be restricted for your use only and other users could not access it.
If you want to attach the file to the server, move the file from your 'Desktop' to a storage area accessible for all users of SQL Server.

Can't add stored procedure to SQL Express
tab in my database, and it procedes to makes a file called SQLQuery1.sql and
saves it as a file, but doesn't add it to the list of my stored procedures...
How do I add it? What am I doing wrong? I see no method of importing the sql
file into my database...
Any help appreciated
Stored procedures are created by executing the statement(s) in the
SQLQuery1.sql file. You don't mention what interface you're using (e.g.
Visual Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, etc.), but you should have an
EXECUTE button somewhere on the toolbar. With the file open, click EXECUTE.
Assuming no errors were encountered the stored procedure is created in the
database. You can keep the file that contains the CREATE PROC statement or
not depending on your needs.

|||Thanks for that. I'm using the Managment Studio CTP (not sure if there is a
release version of it). Anyway, Execute worked for me. I never thought to
Execute it because the SP relies on parameters to execute, so without some
test data I just figured Execute would fail and do nothing else. It did not
seem obvious to me though that the Execute command would add the SP to the
database.

Okay, I can understand how you would think that. It's important to
understand that when you use the Execute button, only the statement or
statements in the query window are executed. In your case, the T-SQL
statement CREATE PROCEDURE is executed, but the statements could also have
been INSERT, DELETE, ALTER PROCEDURE, or any other T-SQL statement.

cannt remove data file from user database
shrink a data files with the emptyfile option so I can
eventually remove the file using the alter database
command. However, I get the following error message when I
run the alter database command:
Error: the file PRADATA4 cannot be removed because it is
not empty.
The file that I'm trying to remove still has 62 extents on it.
I looked MS Knowledge base 254253 and 279511 on this problem but they say it is corrected by SQL server 7.0 with service pack 3.
commands that I'm running are as follows:
1) USE PRA
DBCC TRACEON(8901)
DBCC SHRINKFILE ('PRADATA4', EMPTYFILE)
DBCC TRACEOFF(8901)
2) USE PRA
GO
ALTERDATABASE PRA
REMOVE FILE PRADATA4

Can anyone help?
ThanksYou are shrinking one file, but removing another. This sounds like a sub-optimal approach to me.

Your post is marked as a question but there is no question in it. How can we help?
Thanks
Laurentiu
I'd like to help but I don't know the answer to your question - this is a SQL Server newsgroup focused on security. Someone may know the answer to this, but it's a safer bet to post to an appropriate newsgroup.
To venture a guess, you may need to convert the image to a supported format or you may need to upgrade your IE browser.
For figuring out why IE does not display the PNG banner, you should check the IE newsgroups from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/newsgroups/default.mspx
Search for threads that discuss PNG issues and if you don't find an answer to your question on those newsgroups, then I suggest that you post your question again there.
