Can't connect

I've installed Visual Studio 2005 (including SQL Express) on a XP Home
machine. I've currently problems to connect to the SQL-Server getting the
following error message
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Robert>sqlcmd
HResult 0x2, Level 16, State 1
Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : An error has occurred while
establi
shing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this
failu
re may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does
not
allow remote connections..
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Native Client : Login timeout expired.
I've allready
- enabled the Protocolls via the SQL Server Configuration Manager
- stopped the firewall
- tried it via Access, VS 2005 Server Explorer, ...
I get access to the database when I use SSEUTIL ! Using this tool it was
e.g. possible to attach/dettach a database.
Any idea whats wrong?
Are you in fact trying to connect remotely? If you are, you will need to
enable and start SQLBrowser also. If not, are you using .\sqlexpress as
your server name in the connection string?

Can't change language in server properties

Hi

I'm running SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 on a Danish PC, and I need to have the server language set to Danish.

However, when I want to change the language in server properties (the current language is English (US) using Management Studio Express, I can't - all of the properties on the General page are greyed out.

I know that the SQL Server Express SP1 download is available in several languages (Danish not being one of them) - does that mean that I can't get my SQL Server Express SP1 installation to "speak" Danish at all?

Please help - it's driving me up the wall.

It depends on what you mean by "speak" Danish.

If you mean you want your error messages in Danish, that won't happen. We only support a limited number of localized versions of SQL Server.

If you mean you want to have SQL to store Danish language data, we support that through unicode data types and collation order. You can read more about SQL Collation in BOL; try starting at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-US/library/ms143503(SQL.90).aspx for a quick overview and move on from there.

solved the problem

Can't Attach Database using SQL Server Management Studio Express

I am having a problem Attaching, well actually not being able to see a database when attempting to attach it. I suspect this is more of a security issue rather than a problem with Management Studio, but I can't figure out what is happening.

If I copy a database to Documents and Settings\All Users\... and attempt to attach I can see the file in the selection tree. This also is the case if I copy it to Documents and Settings\Default User\... But if I copy it to Documents and Settings\ADynarski\... which is the account I normally log into, when I expand the folder in the selection tree, nothing is visible. And the same thing occurs if I copy the file to Documents and Settings\Guest\...

I've looked at the security settings and everything appears to be normal. This is on a box with XP Home and SQL Server Express. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing?

Thanks,

Al

What is the account your SQL Server service running under?

If it's domain account, make sure the account has access to the folder you are trying attach database from.

|||Thanks for your input. It is a domain account and the account does have access to the folder. What is really strange is that I used Visual Web Developer Express to create the database in C:\Documents and Settings\Al Dynarski\My Documents\... and it functions properly. But logged into the same account, Server Management Studio sees nothing in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\Al Dynarski or below. I can copy the database out to another folder and then use Server Manangement Studio to work on it. Very strange. I'll continue to look around. Thanks again.|||

Why are you copying the database files to a user folder rather than a common system folder ? If you want to attach the database files not via the userinstance feature, the SQL Server Service need to have access to the specified file for the database, so make sure that the service the SQL Server Account is running on, has access to this file destination.

HTH, Jens Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de

|||Thanks for your suggestion. I don't want to have to copy it; I only tried that to be sure it was in fact a valid database. And I agree with your assessment about SQL service having access rights to the folder containing the database. My problem appears to be figuring out why it doesn't Thanks again.|||

I got it working. I switched SQL Server Express to Local System Login and I now can see the database files and attach them. Since this server instance is just for my local testing, this configuration should work for me. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Al

|||

Hi Al,

I am having the same problem.... how do you switch SQL Server Express to Local System Login, and in doing so what else does this affect?

Thanks,

Claude.

|||

Go to the SCM (Service Control Manager) of Windows, sleect the service you want to change the logon settings for, right click properties, go to the LogOn Tab and change the account to "Local System". Keep in min d that the service needs a restart after changing the settings.

Can't attach a database during an install

I have a Wise for Windows Installer package that will install SQL Express 2005 and then attach a database. In order to keep consistent I am placing the new .MDF file in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$INSTANCE\data. If the folders don't exists I create them. Well, on one test machine I create the folder and copy the MDF to the directory and then use 'osql' to attach the database but I am getting this error:

Msg 5173, Level 16, State 1, Server SREXROAT2\FHMOBILE, Line 1 One or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. Msg 1813, Level 16, State 2, Server [COMPUTERNAME], Line 1 Could not open new database '[DATABASE NAME]'. CREATE DATABASE is aborted. Log file '[LOG FILE NAME]' does not match the primary file. It may be from a different database or the log may have been rebuilt previously.

Does anyone know how to get around this? It works on our other test machines with the same database.

hi,

a dumb question of mines... did you try with another copy of the installer package? is it corrupt?

regards

|||

You should be installing both the .MDF and the .LDF.

|||The problem, besides not attaching correctly, was that the MDF file was attached to a different location and a different name so that when I would attach it during the install it would try and create the log file in the wrong spot and this case it already existed.

Can't attach a database because of security

I am having some issues with SQL Express not being able to create a database because the SQL Express account doesn't have permission. During the install I have the user select the local system account. Even then it doesn't work. If I would go into the folder with the database and give the standard users full control the database will attach.

Is there a way to handle this? I have one install doing all of the work so the user really can't interact with the file system during the install. I am looking at Xcacls as a possible solution but is there something I can do in SQL to fix this?

From BOL under Securing Data and Log Files:

Scenario

The following scenario demonstrates the permissions that are set when a database is created, and modified when the database is detached, and attached.

User1, a member of the dbcreator fixed server role, creates the database Sales that has files e:\Data\Sales.mdf and f:\Log\Sales.ldf. At the time the database is created, the MSSQLSERVER service account is SQLServiceAccount2, a local account. Full Control permissions on the database and log files are granted to SQLServiceAccount2 and members of the Windows Administrators group.

A decision is made to move the Sales database to another instance of SQL Server on the same server. Admin3, a member of the sysadmin fixed server role, detaches the database. The Database Engine sets the permissions on the Sales.mdf and Sales.ldf files so that only the Admin3 account has permissions to access the files.

Admin3 connects to the other instance of SQL Server, SalesServer. The MSSQLSERVER service account for the SalesServer instance is SQLSalesServiceAccount. Admin3, a SQL Server administrator on this instance, attaches the Sales database. Full Control permissions are granted to SQLSalesServiceAccount and members of the

xcalcs may be the way to go here.

SQL Server

|||

I don't see how the BOL entry answers the question. Unless I am missing something the entry has more to do with the actual database permissions as opposed to the permissions to create the log file during the attach process. If I give everyone access to the folder that contains the MDF file I am able to attach it. So that would tell me that SQL Server itself doesn't have permission to the folder.

I tried this on a few other machines and during the install I make sure the local system account is used for the SQL server and it works. I am not sure why the first machine is having such issues.

|||

Evan,

The SQL Service account should always be able to create databases and the only reason I can think of that would cause a database to fail to attach is that the ACLs on the database file itself is preventing the attach.

On the machine where this repros what is the service account SQL Express is running under?

What is the error message?

Are you executing sp_attach_db or calling create database for attach?

thanks,

I talked to the guy with the messed up computer and he said he did go into the registry and delete some of those entries so I have no clue what that could mess up.

The SQL is running under the local system account. I know when I first got to the machine I changed the log on for the service to local system checkbox and it wouldn't start. I wonder if those are connected.

|||

Unfortunately it seems from your description (manually deleted registry entries) that it may b a non-supported configuration and most likely we will not be able to be of much help as it will be really hard for us to find the root cause of the problem under these circumstances.I would suggest contacting MS support.

I would also like to highly recommend against arbitrarily making manual modifications on SQL Server resources (such as registry keys, ACLs, files, etc.) unless it is documented and/or you know how it will affect SQL Server. If you still need to make such modification I strongly suggest making a backup of any important information you may have on the system and document the modification you are making in order to revert back to a well-known state in case the change doesn’t work as you expected

Thanks a lot,

Northwind and Pubs example files from SQL Server 2000. I have tried
more than several times to attach them. I have them in the data file
of SQL Server 2007 express. The files are not read only. I looked
in the permissions and they were but I changed it to writeable and
checked the other files the log file and such.
When I try to attach the files I get the error message "Database
Northwind cannot be upgraded because it is read only or has read only
files. Make the files writeable and re-run recovery".
What is recovery? Do the files have to be upgraded from SQL SErver
2000?
thanks,Hi Janis,
Is that SQL Server 2005? (There is no SQL Server 2007). Have you changed the
permissions of both data and log files?
You could also try this

sorry, it didn't help, I got the Northwind 2000 sample file. I didn't
know the latest version was 2005, so that was helpful, however, I did
change the permissions for all the files, the log file and the mdf
files. They still won't attach.|||On Jan 31, 8:16=A0am, Janis Rough <jlro...@.yahoo.com> wrote:

Hi Janis,
There is no need to attach the northwind or pubs dbs . There are
scripts like instnwnd.sql which will configure the northwind db for
you . Just execute the script.
and don't try to attach the db from higher version to lower
version...!
Thanks

Can't add stored procedure to SQL Express

I select New Stored Procedure from the context menu of the stored procedure
tab in my database, and it procedes to makes a file called SQLQuery1.sql and
saves it as a file, but doesn't add it to the list of my stored procedures...
How do I add it? What am I doing wrong? I see no method of importing the sql
file into my database...
Any help appreciated
Stored procedures are created by executing the statement(s) in the
SQLQuery1.sql file. You don't mention what interface you're using (e.g.
Visual Studio, SQL Server Management Studio, etc.), but you should have an
EXECUTE button somewhere on the toolbar. With the file open, click EXECUTE.
Assuming no errors were encountered the stored procedure is created in the
database. You can keep the file that contains the CREATE PROC statement or
not depending on your needs.

|||Thanks for that. I'm using the Managment Studio CTP (not sure if there is a
release version of it). Anyway, Execute worked for me. I never thought to
Execute it because the SP relies on parameters to execute, so without some
test data I just figured Execute would fail and do nothing else. It did not
seem obvious to me though that the Execute command would add the SP to the
database.

Okay, I can understand how you would think that. It's important to
understand that when you use the Execute button, only the statement or
statements in the query window are executed. In your case, the T-SQL
statement CREATE PROCEDURE is executed, but the statements could also have
been INSERT, DELETE, ALTER PROCEDURE, or any other T-SQL statement.

Cant Add new connection in SQL SERVER EXPRESS

Hi,

I am relatively new to this. I have installed VB 2005 and that has installed a version of SQL Server 2005 Express on my local development machine. I am using VB to develop some demo sites and i can create DB's in the App_Data file and they work when I test and run then by pressing Ctrl + F5.

However i have some demo tutorials that require Northwind and Pubs to do them. So i have installed Northwind and Pubs using the cms prompt and the InstNwnd.sql install. They said everything has been installed fine.

This is where the problem starts. I open new connection in VB, or asses for that matter and try to open my local server machine (just my desktop running WindowsXP pro), Which is called Optiplex. Sometimes i get the optiplex appear in the dropdown that asks for your to choose a server and other times it doesnt. Eevn if the machine appears it doesnt let me chose Pubs or northwind from the second drop down.

I think i must have SQexpress running on the machined named Optiplex because i have the SQL server configuartion manger on it. That tells me i am running SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS) and SQL Server Browser both switched on and running. By the way i have set my SQL manager to run as Local service.

One thing that i consider strange is that when i have had SQLServer Express running on other machines normally there was a little icon running in the right hand corner of the the task bar.

Does anyone know what is going on with my mchine and have i got the SQL server setup correctly?

Just one last piece of additionally information is that i have a folder called C:\SQL Server 2000 Sample Databases which is where the MDF files are located.

Thanks a million Sanson

Hi Sanson,

Could you give me some more details? Which database will the appliation connect to? SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server 2000 ? You mentioned that you have a folder called C:\SQL Server 200 Sample Database which is where the MDF files located, Have these MDF files (Northwind and Pubs) be attached to SQL Server by using Management Satudio? If not,pls follow the steps below:

1. Copy your .mdf file and .ldf(if exists) to another folder.
2. Right click on Databases, and select Attach from the popup menu.
3. In the Attach Databases dialog box,click Add button and select the .mdf file.
4. Click OK to finish, and the database will be atached to your database list in Management Studio.

Thanks.

|||

Thanks for your help.

What had happened was i hadnt installed SQL Management Studio. Once i did everything got sorted out and they were in there.

However i still cant use the upsizing wizard in Access to upsize a database to SQL. I always get a connect error.

Now however i get a the name of my server come up in the dropdown box, which is somethong i suppose.

Can't add a SQL Database (2005 Express Edition) to a C# Project over RDP

Good Afternoon.

I installed C# with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Everything works fine on the account I installed it on, on the local machine. However.

1) I can't connect using RDP to that same account and use SQL. It times out.
2) Other users on that computer cannot make user of SQL. Also times out.

I couldn't find documentation on these issues.

Thanks,

Philski

When you first set up the SQL Express edition the system installs with the networking systems turned off. You will need to activate the remote connections on the sql server express system by using the SQL Server Configuration Manager tools. (These should have also been installed when you installed the sql express system)

|||Didn't work.

Not sure why i should need to open TCP or memory pipes anyways, since RDP is just a reflection of the desktop, and local users do not need a network connection.

I get the same error message when I try to add a database to my C# project, "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed"

Thanks,

Philski|||

Phil, here is a thread from the DB Engine forum that seems to address this issue. Were you logged into the box through TS or on the box locally?

sql

Can''t add a database with C#

I'm new to SQL Express and I can't even seem to do the simplest thing, adding a database with C# 2005 Express

I watched the tutorial at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/beginner/windows/tier3/begin8

and tried what the author did with C# : Made a new project, right clicked the project then Add->New Item-> SQL Database

After a few seconds I get the error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 2"6 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I selected "Local and remote connections" in SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration but it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

This error can be a bit misleading and IIRC I was getting it when I was first poking around in SQL Express a few months ago. With me it was the fact that I wasn't supplying the instance name correctly when connecting to the server. It should be in the form Machinename\InstanceName. Express installs by default as SQLExpress but the people who had set this up for me installed it as SQLSERVEREXP or something like that.

|||Are you sure I even have to enter an instance name? In the video tutorial the author didn't need to do that.
|||

Run sqlcmd.exe -L. It will list the name of your sql server instance to connect to. It will most likely be either 'HOSTNAME' or 'HOSTNAME\SQLEXPRESS'. By default, on the local machine, VS/SSMS use '.' which means 'HOSTNAME'.

|||

Thanks for the replies so far.

I ran sqlcmd.exe -L. It's blank though, it's just "Servers: "

But does this really need to be done though if the database will be on the same machine running Visual C#? Like I said, in the tutorial video the guy didn't even type a line of code. He just added a new "SQL Database" item to his C# project.

If it matters, I haven't done anyting with SQL Express, I just installed it, then installed C# Express and straight away attempted what's being done in the video.

|||

Start the MMC extension services.msc, look to see if sql is running ("SQL Server (?)" - question mark is your instance name (most likely SQLEXPRESS)), and start it if necessary. Then specify HOSTNAME\SQLEXPRESS as the connection string if the question mark is SQLEXPRESS. If the question mark is MSSQLSERVER, use just HOSTNAME.|||I reinstalled everything on a separate computer and it works now. I must have messed up with the initial installation on my original PC.

Thanks for the replies.

Cant access sql express stored procedure..help!

Hi everyone, im having alot of trouble trying to execute a stored proc from sql express. heres my code

DbProviderFactory db =DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("System.Data.SqlClient");

using(DbConnection conn = db.CreateConnection()){

ConnectionStringSettings s =ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["constrolservicetest"];

conn.ConnectionString = s.ConnectionString;

conn.Open();

DbCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand();

cmd.CommandText ="StoredProcedure1";

cmd.CommandType =CommandType.StoredProcedure;

DbParameter param = db.CreateParameter();

param.ParameterName ="@.test";

param.Value = 2;

cmd.Parameters.Add(param);

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();

}

****************************procedure code***************************

Create PROCEDUREdbo.StoredProcedure1

(

@.testint

)

AS

Update temp

Settest = @.test

******************************************************************

The code just doesn't update. I know my connection string is correct because i got the datareader to work, but i just cant get the stored proc to call. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

That code looks reasonable to me. Are you sure it's being called?

Can't access SQL Express from SQL Server

I installed SQL Express on an instance of Microsoft Virtual Server. I
haven't been able to connect to it from SQL Server which is running on the
same network, but on our real server. Now I have been able to successfully
able to connect to the real SQL Server from the Express but it doesn't work
the other way around. I am using the same hostname that I see in the
Express managment studio... \\PARENTVM\SQLEXPRESS using the login I created
in Express.
I allowed access through Windows Firewall, and I enabled the allow access
from remote users in the Express configuration.
What am I missing?
Hi there,
Have you enabled remote connections on the SQLExpress instance?
By default the remote connections are disabled. Open "SQL Server
Surface Area Configuration" under Configuration tools. You then need to
select the "Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections"
option. The Remote connections option will allow you to change the
connection types. Once you've done that restart the service to make
sure the change takes effect.
Hope this help...
