Can't change the name of a OLE DB Source component name

Hi,

I've created an application that create package with a dataflow. The package with the dataflow and the ole db Source was created succesfully but for some reason the name of the Ole DB Source dosen't change programmitcally It's stays with the default name "OLE DB Source". This is very problematic because I want to add another Ole Db source and the package won't load because there will be two components with the same name.

Thanks.

This is the Code, It's from msdn exmples:

Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline
Imports Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper

Module Module1

Sub Main()

Dim package As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Package = _
New Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Package()
Dim e As Executable = package.Executables.Add("DTS.Pipeline.1")
Dim thMainPipe As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.TaskHost = _
CType(e, Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.TaskHost)
Dim dataFlowTask As MainPipe = CType(thMainPipe.InnerObject, MainPipe)

' Add an OLEDB connection manager to the package.
Dim cm As ConnectionManager = package.Connections.Add("OLEDB")
cm.Name = "OLEDB ConnectionManager"
cm.ConnectionString = "Data Source=(local);" & _
"Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;" & _
"Integrated Security=SSPI;"

' Add an OLE DB source to the data flow.
Dim component As IDTSComponentMetaData90 = _
dataFlowTask.ComponentMetaDataCollection.New()
component.Name = "AdventureWorks;Product"
component.ComponentClassID = "DTSAdapter.OleDbSource.1"
' You can also use the CLSID of the component instead of the PROGID.
'component.ComponentClassID = "{2C0A8BE5-1EDC-4353-A0EF-B778599C65A0}";

' Get the design time instance of the component.
Dim instance As CManagedComponentWrapper = component.Instantiate()

' Initialize the component.
instance.ProvideComponentProperties()

' Specify the connection manager.
If component.RuntimeConnectionCollection.Count > 0 Then
component.RuntimeConnectionCollection(0).ConnectionManager = _
DtsConvert.ToConnectionManager90(package.Connections(0))
End If

' Set the custom properties.
instance.SetComponentProperty("AccessMode", 2)
instance.SetComponentProperty("SqlCommand", _
"Select * from Production.Product")

' Reinitialize the metadata.
instance.AcquireConnections(vbNull)
instance.ReinitializeMetaData()
instance.ReleaseConnections()

' Add other components to the data flow and connect them.

End Sub

End Module

If I remember correctly, the Name should be set after the call to

instance.ProvideComponentProperties();

Cant attach a database using MSDE deployment toolkit

I am using the MSDE deployment toolkit along with the
sample programs provided by Mario S. Almost everything is
fine when I want to create a database, add tables, and
etc. but I am unable to attach a database.
On one instance called "george" i have created a database
called "lawncare" and moved it to the C: drive. I am using
the same embedded resource file "DBInstall.sql" that is
used in the examples (and which works for creating tables,
etc) but I receive the following error message:
"An exception occured in the ONAfterInstall event handler
of DBInstaller.CustomInstaller.
>Line 2: Incorrect systax near 'go'
Line 4: Incorrect syntax near 'go'"
The script I am using in the resource file is:
set nocount off
go
exec sp_attach_single_file_db @.dbname = 'lawncare',
@.physname = 'c:\lawncare_Data.mdf'
go
If, in the same resource file I were to use this script:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[City] (
[CityId] [int] IDENTITY (0, 1) NOT NULL ,
[Description] [varchar] (50) COLLATE
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
The table would be created just fine...(the routine
substitutes ";" for "go" when reading the text to execute.)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
NJ
NJ,
Your sql is working fine, I tried it and it worked. But make sure that this database that you are trying to attach is actually detached from somewhere before. The sp_attach_single_file_db works with databases which are detached from somewhere. Also mak
e sure that your log file is at c:\ drive too .
let me know if it doesn't work.

Can't attach a database because of security

I am having some issues with SQL Express not being able to create a database because the SQL Express account doesn't have permission. During the install I have the user select the local system account. Even then it doesn't work. If I would go into the folder with the database and give the standard users full control the database will attach.

Is there a way to handle this? I have one install doing all of the work so the user really can't interact with the file system during the install. I am looking at Xcacls as a possible solution but is there something I can do in SQL to fix this?

From BOL under Securing Data and Log Files:

Scenario

The following scenario demonstrates the permissions that are set when a database is created, and modified when the database is detached, and attached.

User1, a member of the dbcreator fixed server role, creates the database Sales that has files e:\Data\Sales.mdf and f:\Log\Sales.ldf. At the time the database is created, the MSSQLSERVER service account is SQLServiceAccount2, a local account. Full Control permissions on the database and log files are granted to SQLServiceAccount2 and members of the Windows Administrators group.

A decision is made to move the Sales database to another instance of SQL Server on the same server. Admin3, a member of the sysadmin fixed server role, detaches the database. The Database Engine sets the permissions on the Sales.mdf and Sales.ldf files so that only the Admin3 account has permissions to access the files.

Admin3 connects to the other instance of SQL Server, SalesServer. The MSSQLSERVER service account for the SalesServer instance is SQLSalesServiceAccount. Admin3, a SQL Server administrator on this instance, attaches the Sales database. Full Control permissions are granted to SQLSalesServiceAccount and members of the

xcalcs may be the way to go here.

I don't see how the BOL entry answers the question. Unless I am missing something the entry has more to do with the actual database permissions as opposed to the permissions to create the log file during the attach process. If I give everyone access to the folder that contains the MDF file I am able to attach it. So that would tell me that SQL Server itself doesn't have permission to the folder.

I tried this on a few other machines and during the install I make sure the local system account is used for the SQL server and it works. I am not sure why the first machine is having such issues.

|||

Evan,

The SQL Service account should always be able to create databases and the only reason I can think of that would cause a database to fail to attach is that the ACLs on the database file itself is preventing the attach.

On the machine where this repros what is the service account SQL Express is running under?

What is the error message?

Are you executing sp_attach_db or calling create database for attach?

thanks,

-Steven Gott

I talked to the guy with the messed up computer and he said he did go into the registry and delete some of those entries so I have no clue what that could mess up.

The SQL is running under the local system account. I know when I first got to the machine I changed the log on for the service to local system checkbox and it wouldn't start. I wonder if those are connected.

|||

Unfortunately it seems from your description (manually deleted registry entries) that it may b a non-supported configuration and most likely we will not be able to be of much help as it will be really hard for us to find the root cause of the problem under these circumstances.I would suggest contacting MS support.

I would also like to highly recommend against arbitrarily making manual modifications on SQL Server resources (such as registry keys, ACLs, files, etc.) unless it is documented and/or you know how it will affect SQL Server. If you still need to make such modification I strongly suggest making a backup of any important information you may have on the system and document the modification you are making in order to revert back to a well-known state in case the change doesn’t work as you expected

Thanks a lot,

Can't assign connection manager object to DataReader Source

I'm trying to create a DataReader source object using a working ADO.NET Oracle Client connection object that exists in the connection manager.

Problem:

When I open the editor the DataReaderSrc component shows only one row under the Connection Managers tab:

Name=IDbConnection
Connection Manager=blank
Description=Managed connection manager

I cannot assign the ADO.NET connection (or any connections). I see a warning at the bottom of the Connection Managers tab:

"Not all connection managers have been set. Set all connection managers."

When I click refresh the warning message changes to:

"The runtime connection manager with the ID "" cannot be found. Verify that the connection manager collection has a connection manager with that ID."

I am prevented from removing the IDbConnection or assigning my Connection Manager object to the DataReader Source.

Thanks, -- Mike

I also have the same problem, I'm sure it must be some tiny detail somewhere / something very basic, but I have been unable to fix it. Can someone help? Thanks!

I had the same problem. In my case the 'advanced editor for datareader source' is very, very confusing. First of all, you have to create a connection manager, which I did already. But, it was not at all intuitive that you have to click on the box under 'connection manager' and select a connection manager. By default the box is black and grayed out like both the other fields which you cannot change. Gee, thanks redmond.

Data Reader source accepts connection manager of Type ADO.NET only.

so First you have to create a Connection Manager to your Data Base using ADO.net Provider ONLY.

open the advanced editior of data reader source, go to connection managers tab, you will see IdbConnection , beside that there will be another column named connection manger, select your created connection manager there (ADO.Net one). Then go to Component properties tab and in sql command enter your sql query. go to columns mapping tab ..now you can see your columns.

hello,

i thought that I resolve the problem of the connection but there was another problem that didn't permit me to save the connection to the advanced editor.

the error is "Component is already connected. The component needs to be disconnected before attempting to connect it."

Looking in the documentation it says "The altered column cannot be...Used in

the data type is not changed, and the new size is equal to or larger than

Since the column is nvarchar, the data type is not changed, and the new size
is equal to the old size, this should be allowed.
Is the documentation just wrong or have I misunderstood something?

You need to drop the index, alter the column and then recreate the
index, that's the only way.

Hi Jerry,
Welcome to use MSDN Managed Newsgroup!
From your descriptions, I understood when you want to create the diagram
via SQL Server Enterprise Manager, you will encounter the error message
"Invalid Class String". If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel
free to point it out.
Based on my knowledge, it seems some DLL in the SQL Server Client Tools is
corrupted. You will have to reinstall the SQL Server 2000 Client Tools and
then re-apply the Service Pack on the server.
If the reinstallation also fails, please attach the sqlstp.log and

can''t add new Stored Procedure item in Database project

I'm trying to create a CLR stored procedure and went ahead and created a Database Project. But when I click on New Item... it doesn't contain "Stored Procedure" as an item, just script items. How do I add this template? At first I was thinking well maybe it knows my SQL Server doesn't have CLR turned on, so I went ahead and turned that on but still doesn't show up. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Craig

You have probably chosen wrong project type. The project type to create SQLCLR "stuff" is under either C# or the VB node and it is called (IIRC) Database Project. What makes it a bit confuding is that there exists a top level Database Project as well (at the same level as C# and VB). The project type is for T-SQL scripts etc. I assume that is what you have chosen!

Can't add a sibling or child to a member in a dimension

Following the Foodmart tutorial, I get to a point where I create a parent-child dimension and I browse data. Then I have to add a sibling or a child by right-clicking a member and selecting "New member" (all in the Dimension Editor). However, nothing happens on my right-clicking, no context menu at all. Could it be a versioning issue? I'm using SQL Server 2000 Standard edition. I already found out I can't use the writeback feature in this version...

Thanks and happy holidays!

Ale

Hi Ale,

I think that you need Enterprise Edition, since the right-click menu is only available after the dimension's Write-enabled property is set to True:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa198057(SQL.80).aspx

>>

Analysis Services

Write-Enabled Dimensions

...

Note This feature is available only if you install Analysis Services for Microsoft? SQL Server? 2000 Enterprise Edition.

...

To write-enable a dimension, set its Write-enabled property to True in the properties pane of Dimension Editor (if the dimension is shared) or Cube Editor (if the dimension is private).

can't access report through report manager...

Here is what is happening.
I have a working project PROG created using VS.Net. I create a new
project for reports RPTPROJ under PROJ.
I create several reports RPT1.RDL, RPT2.RDL under the new project
RPTPROJ.
Now I start the REPORT MANAGER and create a new folder (MYREPORTS) and
upload all my reports (RDLs) into this new folder. Now when I click on
any of the reports from here, it doesn't show up. Only shows up an
"Action Canceled" message.
Here is the URL, it generates for one of the reports:
http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fRPTPROJ%2fRPT1
But when I goto,
http://localhost/reportserver?%2fPROJ%2fRPTPROJ
I can see all my reports and run them.
Please can someone explain what I should do to run them from the
report manager?
ThanksWhen you publish to the report server in Report Designer, in the project
properties dialog (where you set your URL to the report server), there is a
target folder property. Set that to MYREPORTS. By default it is the
project name, which is why you're getting link s containing /RPTPROJ/RPT1

I made the changes suggested by you but still the same problem. The URL it shows is:
http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fMYREPORTS%2fRPT1
What am I doing wrong?

Cann't create Legacy (SQL 2000) Maintenance Plans

I recently installed the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio on my workstation
and the install of this new tool removed the old SQL Server 2000 Enterprise
Manager.
Since 99% of my installed server base is still SQL Server 2000, here’s my
question.
How am I supposed to manage my SQL Server 2000 instances with the SQL Server
2005 tools?
When I connect to a SQL Server 2000 instance, using SQL 2005 Management
Studio, I can see under Legacy -> Database Maintenance Plans, the existing
plans; however I cannot create any new Legacy Maintenance plans.
Kurt
It sounds bad but you should have thought of that before you upgraded then.
The documentation in 2005 clearly spells this out. If you need to change or
create new 2000 maintenance plans then you should have a machine with 2000
EM on it for that purpose. You must have chosen to upgrade your existing
instance instead of doing a side by side installation. There is no problem
running 2000 and 2005 on the same box and having both EM and SSMS running at
the same time. You can reinstall 2000 client tools but I am not sure if you
need to uninstall 2005 first or not. I would try it first and see.

Cannot subscribe report

Has anybody experienced this strange problem? I can create a e-mail
subscription in Management Studio. However, when I am in web based
subscription, type in the entries and click "OK", the next screen asks me to
"specify options for report delivery" again. No matter what I choose ("Report
Server E-mail" or "Report Server File Share"), it prompt back to the same
screen.
Any tip or help is very much appreciated.Hello Jason,
I would like to know have you applied SP1 on your reporting services?
Also, if you created a subscription in the Management Studio and then try
to modify the subscription in the web site, do you still get this issue?
And if you tested on other client, does this issue still occur?

thing happens. Thank you for any troubleshooting clues.

I set it up in Management Studio. My problem is I can not use Management
