Can''t configure Log Shipping on a workgroup network

I have a WORKGROUP network with 2 SQL Server 2005 servers. I want to configure for log shipping.

When I try and set up the 'Secondary Database Settings', and try and run the process, it gets an error saying it cannot access the backup file (the secondary cannot access the backup file on the primary). The file is there. It is shared. I have created local accounts on both machines called 'SyncAccount', and have given full control over the shared directory (on the primary) and local directory on the secondary. I have chaged the SQL Agent to use the local account.

I have tested access for the created user by doing a "runas" from the command prompt.

I have invested hours in this. I have found several relevent artcles, but have not found the answer.

What is wrong with this thing?

Is this login part of sql sysadmin group? What account is used to start up sqlserver service? Does this account have permission to write to the shared folder? What's about the sqlagent service?

It has been a while since I made this post, but I am still having the problem.

Is this login part of sql sysadmin group? I have given admin provlidges to thie user.

What account is used to start up sqlserver service? I created a new "syncaccount" as assiged it to the sql agent. It has admin rights.

Does this account have permission to write to the shared folder? Yes. I tested this by linking to the shared folder using "connect as".

What's about the sqlagent service? Explained above.

I think there is something wrong with the server. Perhaps my configuration is the issue. Two servers (not on a domain) in a workgroup.

|||

When you operate in a workgroup, network permission is nothing more than Windows impersonation. For things to work, the account must be created on both workgroup nodes and has the same password. Logshipping is nothing more than a whole bunch of sql jobs that get executed under a security context (i.e. sqlagent or the proxy). If your job is owned by a sysadmin, the job will get executed under sqlagent service account to access network resources. If it's a non-sysadmin, it will be under the proxy account.

Take a look at xp_cmdshell in book online. There is a link to how to setup/configure the proxy account.

To see if the NT accout is valid, try backup a database to the network share. Resolve this before you attempt to solve the logshipping issue.

Can't Administer

I am trying for the first time on this SQL server to use the FULL TEXT
SEARCH. I can successfully use it on other similar servers. When I try to
add a FULL TEXT CATALOG to a database I get this message when the wizard is
trying to do the work:
The Microsoft Search Service cannot be administered under the present
account.
I am logged in with an account in the Administrator group. The Search
Service is started. The server is itself is running with an account in the
Administrator group. I have checked and rechecked and everything I can think
of is the same as systems where I can make this work. I am likely missing
the obvious but can't find it. Any ideas.
Thanks
Tom G.
Can you verify that the MSSearch account is running under the local system
account. Has anyone modified the SQL Server service account through the
services applet in control panel as opposed to using EM? To fix this, right
click on your server in EM, select properties, click the security tab,
change it to run under the system account, bounce your SQL Server, and then
modify it again to run under a local admin account.
Also verify that no one has removed the builtin\admin account from the
system administrators role. To do this connect to your SQL Server in EM,
expand the security folder and expand the server roles node. Double click on
the system administrator role and ensure the builtin\administrators account
is present.
if not run the following in qa.
if not exists (select * from master.dbo.syslogins where
loginname = N'NT Authority\System')
exec sp_grantlogin N'NT Authority\System'
exec sp_defaultdb N'NT Authority\System', N'master'
exec sp_defaultlanguage N'NT Authority\System',

|||Tom,
Is the master the default database for the BUILTIN\Administrator account as
well as a member of the Sysadmin role?
When you changed it to run under the System Account (LocalSystem) did you do
this via the Enterprise Manager's server security tab?
The Enterprise Manager code runs an internal system extended proc -
xp_updateFTSSQLAccount - when any change to the MSSQLServer account is
executed, this xp proc makes similar change to the MSSearch service as well.

Can't add anything new? HELP!

Ok, we have two SQL servers running for the past year or
two. I dont make changes often but today we opened up our
access program to connect to the SQL server. Whenever I
add a new table it's blank. It allows me to add the
category but when I click on the table to add info, the
column names are there but no while boxes. It's almost
like it's read only, excelt I'm using the sa account when
logging in. So, For kicks I set up another server (from
scratch (all are 2003) and am getting the same thing with
that also. I don't understand it.
With enterprise manager I can add info to the database,
but not from any computer trying to access it from
Microsoft Access. If I copy an exisiting table, I can add
items to that, just not creating a new one. Has anyone
else seen this problem?
I've been at this now for about 8 hours and I'm going
nuts. I've even created a new account called "test" gave
it ever permission available (admin, and all) and when I
try to open a table I create a I get a message that the
database has been disconnected. But whatever it is, all
the servers are doing the same thing. Could it be a patch
for WIN 2003 that might have caused it? I'm reaching here
but nothing seems to work. So here I am with 3 servers
now and I can't add a table to any of them unless it's
from enterprise manager. And even though I can add the
table (and data) from there, it's still read only like
when I open it in Access. There's no final row to add
more information into...

If so, you'll need to define at least one column with a unique index.

|||Yea exactly... I have an .adp file that opens the
database on the SQL server using sa as the ID. When I
create a new table using "design view" I:
1. Enter a few columns, for example right now I just put
one with Name, Address. Name is set to nvarchar with 50
as the length and Address is the same
(even made name an indexed field for kicks)
2. Clicked on the X box at the top right to close of that
window
3. Access says "DO you want to save changes to the design
of table2?
4. Selected Yes and then prompted with what name I want
to call it, put in test for this example
5. Get the standard message that no primary key is
defined. Told it Yes to create one.
6. Now, normally that design view goes away but it's
still here so clicked on the X again to close it out.
I now see "test" as a table. Click on test and I get the
standard view to enter data. However, I see Name and
Address as column headers but no box under it to enter
information. And at the bottom of that screen the only
box that is not grayed out is the one to set the max
record count being displayed.
Yes, nothing seems to work. On all three of the SQL
servers I get the same exact thing. Thought maybe by
chance it was my computer, went to another one and
created a bring new adp file on that system... same
thing...
I don't understand it... You can enter items into
anything that is already created, but nothing you create
new. And, the three server are *not* connected except for
all being in the same domain. No data is replicated
between them so it's something recent that caused it and
I honestly don't know where to begin...
I'm stumped.

If so, you'll need to define at least one column with a unique index.

> Help?|||Yea exactly...

Can't add any SP to master DB

Hello
I have a problem with one of our DB servers, MS SQL 2000 SP4.
We use SP for weekly maintenance, this SP is stored in the master DB.
Therefore I had to add a new SP into all DB servers but when I run the
script on this server I get the error:
Server: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 5, Procedure
sp_u_IndexDefragAndRebuild, Line 172
There is already an object named 'sp_u_IndexDefragAndRebuild' in the
database.
The script does have an exist and drop procedure command at the
beginning. I also tried several naming for the SP but I get always the
same error.
While I was googling for a solution a found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827448/en-us
a workaround. But when I run this script I get the same error:
Server: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 6, Line 1
There is already an object named 'test_table0' in the database.
and if I try to drop the table I get:
Server: Msg 3701, Level 11, State 5, Line 1
Cannot drop the table 'test_table0', because it does not exist in the
system catalog.
Is there a solution without restoring the whole master DB? And if I
have to restore the master DB what do I need to look for?
I appreciate any help

Check whether you have create 'test_table0' in the SP more than
once.
Also make sure that table is in master and check the owner of the
table ( may not be dbo)

no, the 'test_table0' was not created, not even once but the error
says that there is already a table. If I go throught sysobject I cant
find the SP and if I try to add a table manually by right mousbutton
and new table... I get the same error:
'test_tab' table
- Unable to create table.
ODBC error: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]There is
already an object named 'test_tab' in the database.
same happens if I try to add a new SP manually:

Following may point to some of the issues
1. Check database connection in ODBC pointing to intended server/
instance and database
2. ODBC user may be connected with a sql server user and there may be
table name with owner being the connected user . If sql user connected
through ODBC is abcuser check any table with abcuser is present in the
database
3. No spelling mistakes in object names (table, SP etc)
4. Multiple users are connecting to your database and trying to run
same code (create table, create procedure etc) . I suggest keep
creating tables , SPs as a separate task . Do not mingle this with
your application

Thanks for your input but all of them look good.
I am the DBA and nobody else is allowed to use master DB or add any
tables/SP to the master DB. There are some users connected to other
DBs but without permission to add objects to any DB.
I don't think this is an user issue, I rather believe there is
something wrong with my master DB.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827448/en-us
The object ID is already in use and the existing object has rows in
the syscolumns system table. When you try to create a stored
procedure, a failure may occur with error number 134. This problem
occurs because the syscolumns table already contains a row with the
same values for the objid, the colid, and the paramid columns.
How can I find out what object ID does that SP uses if I can't find it
in sysobject of the master DB?
thanks

There is already an object named 'sp_u_IndexDefragAndRebuild' in the

The script does have an exist and drop procedure command at the
beginning. I also tried several naming for the SP but I get always the
same error.
While I was googling for a solution a found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827448

a workaround.

Is there a solution without restoring the whole master DB? And if I
have to restore the master DB what do I need to look for?
I appreciate any help

Following may point to some of the issues
1. Check database connection in ODBC pointing to intended server/
instance and database
2. ODBC user may be connected with a sql server user and there may be
table name with owner being the connected user . If sql user connected
through ODBC is abcuser check any table with abcuser is present in the
database
3. No spelling mistakes in object names (table, SP etc)
4. Multiple users are connecting to your database and trying to run
same code (create table, create procedure etc) . I suggest keep
creating tables , SPs as a separate task . Do not mingle this with
your application|||On Aug 3, 10:49 am, M A Srinivas <masri...@.gmail.com> wrote:

The object ID is already in use and the existing object has rows in
the syscolumns system table. When you try to create a stored
procedure, a failure may occur with error number 134. This problem
occurs because the syscolumns table already contains a row with the
same values for the objid, the colid, and the paramid columns.
How can I find out what object ID does that SP uses if I can't find it
in sysobject of the master DB?
thanks

There is already an object named 'test_table0' in the database.
and if I try to drop the table I get:

Can't access reports by server name

I am trying to set up Reporting Services on one of our servers. It is set up
and I can get to the reports by typing in http://localhost/reports but when
I try http://<servername>/reports I get page not found - this also applies
to any files in the default website. I think it is something straight
forward in IIS but I don't what it is - I am a programmer and a bit clueless
with IIS. Regards, Chris. Are you sure your <servername> is where the reports are located? The
<localhost> is an alias for 127.0.0.1 or the local loopback address. It
sounds like I would check to see also if the server has more than one address
on it. The /reports URL may not be listening on the address for <servername>.

Cannot start Sql service

Hi guys,
I had 2 SQL Servers on my machine, one was the MSDE netSDK
and the other was MS SQL Server 2000.
I removed the latter as I was quite happy with MSDE but
as soon as I removed it the play icon in the SQL Manager
disappeared and I get a message saying
'Cannot find the file specified' as there is nothing in
the services drop down combo. How do I fix this. I still
have all my databases in the netSDK.
Thanks in advance
Regards
tribalIfI remember correctly removing the SQL Server instance removes all of the
GUI tools. You'll need to find a free GUI for the MSDE since the once that
came with SQL Server are gone.

Cannot start DTC in Enterprise Mgr

Hello, experts!

On Sunday, as part of routine maintenance, we had to shut down our clustered servers. When we tried to bring them back up, they would not recognize our array unless we disabled the cluster service. It was agreed that we should disable the cluster service (it's caused nothing but problems due to poor implementation and vendor software support), but now we're having difficulties with SQL Server. We're having several "small" problems (i.e. unable to remove our old instance of SQL Server), but the main issue is that our client cannot connect to our server. They are able to ping us and connect to our development database (not affected by the failure), but cannot connect to the production database. Currently, the most obvious difference between production and development is that development displays a green icon (running) for both Distributed Transaction Coordinator and Full-Text Search in Support Services (Enterprise Mgr), whereas production has a red (stopped) icon for both. Also, we previously identified that MSDTC was not running and that it was inaccessible in Component Services, so we uninstalled and reinstalled. We were then able to access MSDTC in Component Services. That said, when I attempt to start DTC or Full-Text Search in Support Services, I receive the following error message:

An error 1722 - (The RPC server is unavailable) occurred while performing this service operation on the MSDTC service.

I've troubleshot this error message and verified that both RPC and DTC are started in the Services menu, that both services are set to start automatically and that both are using "Network Service" login. At this point, I have no idea what could possibly be causing this problem or if this could even be related to our client's inability to connect to our SQL database. We're running SQL Server 2000 SP4 on Win Server 2003 Dell machines. Any assistance is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Can you discuss what steps you took to disable the cluster service? Also, was this MSCS, Veritas Cluster or other?

When an instance is installed as clustered, the configuration is set up to only run under the cluster. This may be causing some of the troubles.

|||

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the response. We're using MSCS. We disabled the Cluster Disk Driver in Device Manager, then disabled the Cluster Service in Services.

How would we go about utilizing a previously clustered server in a non-clustered capacity? Would we have to rebuild the server with a clean install of Windows Server and SQL Server?

|||

Did you cluster MS DTC? If not, that is most likely your issue. On a clustered implementation, DTC needs to be clustered as well. It's done at the OS level.

Try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294209/ or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243204/en-us

On the log of machine1 i see,
Database Mirroring login attempt by user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON.' failed with error: 'Connection handshake failed. The login 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON' does not have CONNECT permission on the endpoint. State 84.'.

i have similar problems as in

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1020144&SiteID=1

i am a sysadmin on both SQL Servers and have connect permission on both end points.
Both the endpoints are in started state and listening to all IP's
Both services are as 'Local System'
As per what was mentioned in the above post to add a 'domain/machine$' user did not help.
Tried using setspn.exe to add a new SPN MSSQLsvc/<HOST>:<MIRRORINGPORT> did not work. an ERROR comes 'not enough privileges'
setup shows the following SPN only on both
HOST/Machine name
HOST/Machine name.Domin.com
MSSQLSvc/Machine name.Domin.com:1433
SMTPSVC/Machine name
SMTPSVC/machine name.Domain.com

and on second machine
HOST/Machine name

HOST/Machine name.Domin.com

MSSQLSvc/Machine name.Domin.com:1433

any Clues?

This is probably your problem. Run this command from an account with enough priviledges on the Active Directory. One easy trick is to run this command as the LocalSystem of the machine <HOST>. To achieve this, you must start a command prompt as LocalSystem on <HOST>. Use the AT service for this, scheduling an interactive CMD.EXE one minute in future. E.g. if the clock is 11:45, run this:
at 11:46 /interactive cmd.exe
In one minute a command prompt running as LocalSystem will popup. From this, run the SETSPN. You must do this on all machines involved (principal, witness, mirror if any)

P.S. This assumes you're running the SQL Server service as LocalSystem or as NETWORK SERVICE.

Cannot send attachment using sp_send_dbmail

Hi,
I've been scraching my head on this for so long. We have two servers (both
running SQL 2005 64-bit Enterprise Edn SP2 on Windows 2003 Standard 64-bit),
one of the servers is able to send the attachment in the email, whereas the
other is failing with Msg 22051 error:
Msg 22051, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
Attachment file
\\srvr2\data$\Departments\Administration
1\Finance\shared1\New
Test\NewProd\Backup\test.txt is invalid.
The hardware configuration of both of these servers is exactly the same and
the SQL 2005 configuration is also exactly the same. Here is the command
which runs fine on one server but doesn't on the other server:
msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail
@.profile_name = N'LOCAL',
@.recipients = N'smarty@.testworld.com',
@.subject = N'TEST',
@.body = N'TEST',
@.file_attachments =
N'\\srvr2\data$\Departments\Administrati
on1\Finance\shared1\New
Test\NewProd\Backup\test.txt'
Database Mail settings on both the servers is also exactly the same. If I
don't specify the attachment, I receive the email in my inbox. I have also
tried mapping the drive, but still the same error. The strange thing is that
it works on the other server. Very odd. Did anybody come across this
situation..'
Thanks,My guess would be that the account that sql server runs under on the server
in which this fails does not have access to that share. Is it a domain
account and does that account have the correct perms to access that share.

Database Mail uses the Microsoft Windows security context of the current
user to control access to files. Therefore, users who are authenticated with
SQL Server Authentication cannot attach files using @.file_attachments.

Mapping a drive creates a drive letter for *your* profile. You need to make
sure the SQL service account has access to the share, not you.

Most likely the service accounts are different... one is a domain account
thathas access to the share, and the other one is a local account that does
not.|||Thanks Andrew for your answer. The account SQL server runs under is a Domain
Service Account with high-level privileges and it has full permissions on th
e
server. Both the servers run under the same Domain Service Account

We have Windows Authentication enabled on the server. Currently we are
testing this server and there are no users accessing this server except
myself and I have admin permissions on the box and to the share. I also trie

logging in to the server using the Domain Service Account under which SQL
Server and SQL Agent runs, but still I get the same error.
Thanks..

The service accounts under which SQL Server and SQL Agent runs are same on
both the servers, and it is a domain accuont with access to the share. I hav
e
checked it so many times, I am going insane.
